Company History

The company opened for business in Cincinnati in 1959 under the name Brakefire Inc.. It designed and installed carbon dioxide fire suppression systems to suppress fires in heavy duty industrial settings, such as printing presses, quench tanks, and steel mills. Fire extinguishers soon became an even larger product line as OSHA mandated their presence in the workplace.

Eventually kitchen hood fire suppression systems, sprinkler system service, and exit light and emergency lighting were added. In 1973 the Cincinnati firm was sold to Silco. The name Silco is an acronym for Standard Industrial Laundries Co., which had provided uniform rental service since 1931. Silco exited the industrial laundry business in 1978 and has specialized in fire protection and life safety ever since.

The company continued to grow by opening facilities in Dayton in 1989, Columbus in 1994 and expanding by aquisition into Akron in 2002.

Back in 1973, Silco Fire Protection's employment was 6 people. By 2009, the company employed 120; 45 in Cincinnati, 23 in Dayton, 25 in Columbus, and 27 in Akron. Silco is owned and operated by the James A. Fraser Family, whose Grandfather founded the original Silco in 1931, and Marc R. Ollier, Silco's CPA who managed the Silco account for its outside accountants prior to joining Silco. Mr. Fraser graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967. Mr. Ollier graduated from Xavier University in 1978. David A. Fraser graduated from Lehigh University's Engineering School in 2001..
