Carbon Dioxide Fire Suppression SystemsCarbon Dioxide has been used as a fire suppression agent for almost a century. The concept is simple, flood an area with a large quantity of this clean, odorless gas, displacing the oxygen and supressing the fire. This process is not without risks, however, and it is imperative that precautions are taken to protect potential occupants against asphxiation. Warning sirens, odorizers, safety lockout valves, and properly placed warning signs help keep occupants aware of the risks and signals for evacuation of the area preceeding any discharge of the gas. CO2 can be stored in high and low pressure tanks and used in a variety of applications. When a versitile, low-cost agent, that's easy to recharge, and creates no mess or damage is what's desired, Carbon Dioxide is worth a look. High Pressure CO2 SystemsHigh pressure carbon dioxide fire suppression technology has been around for decades. Early systems were installed as far back as the 1930's. The technology has improved over the years, but the concept remains the same. A bank of industrial cylinders houses the CO2 at about 750 psi. A control system detects the fire and activates the CO2 bank supplying the CO2 to the nozzles through a hydraulically designed piping network. The cylinder bank is often equipped with a connected reserve supply of cylinders so the system can be brought back on line in a short period of time. Silco will take the cylinders off site for recharging and return them to the bank within 48 hours or sooner if conditions merit. High pressure cylinders are subject to periodic hydrostatic testing which will require additional downtime. Unlike bulk systems, however, the CO2 is not refrigerated. Low Pressure Bulk CO2 SystemsBulk low pressure CO2 utilizes a central storage tank that keeps the CO2 at a lower pressure through the use of a refigeration unit. The large central storage tank can supply multiple hazards and has the capability to discharge multiple times if needed. Unlike high pressure systems, the low pressure tank does not need to be hydrostatically tested and can be easily filled on-site by a gas supplier with CO2 tanker trucks. Coupled with advanced detection and control systems, and automatic selector valves, a bulk system is ideal for large industrial applications with multiple hazards. Mini-bulk units are also available. The original "clean" agent, carbon dioxide suppresses fire without leaving behind an agent to damage sensitive equipment. And because there is no agent to clean up, you’re back in business faster. To provide the most economical system arrangement without sacrificing performance, we offer both High and Low pressure systems including the exclusive ANSUL® "Mini-Bulk" tank technology.
